JLP releases local government Manifesto
Monique Grange, Gleaner Writer
The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has released its Local Government Manifesto ahead of Monday’s Local Government elections.
For the most part, the 31-page document highlights the JLP’s achievements in Local government while in power.
The JLP said its strategy towards effective local governance continues to be based on three areas.
It said it will be moving to effect a clear separation of the functions of local government and central government, as well as to accord to local government full financial and jurisdictional autonomy.
The party said it plans to strengthen the institutional capacity in an effort to ensure effective management and accountability in the delivery of services.
The document also outlines what residents are to expect from their JLP parish council representatives.
Meanwhile, the JLP said it also plans to lobby for legislation to properly define local government.
It has also proposed the promulgation of what it says are three strategic laws.
They are the Local Governance, Local Government and Finance and Human Resource Management laws.
The JLP’s Manifesto comes two days after the People’s National Party officially launched its document.
