EAC chairman urges candidates to be on best behaviour

Miller

ELECTORAL ADVISORY Committee (EAC) chairman, Professor Errol Miller, issued a stern reminder to candidates in the upcoming Local Government elections, that they were being expected to conduct themselves in a manner becoming of persons in their position, and were also expected to encourage their agents and supporters to do likewise.

Professor Miller was speaking in an address to the nation Sunday night, which was aired on local media. He reminded candidates that the conditions for voiding elections through applications made by the Constituted Authority were much more easily reached in Local Government elections, than in General Elections, and so candidates should be on their best behaviour.

"No candidate will be allowed to win (an election) by fraud," Professor Miller affirmed. "Investment in illegal activities is a waste of time, energy and resources."

Professor Miller went on to say that the EAC and Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) were fully prepared for Local Government elections and would be approaching them with the same level of seriousness that they did for the General Elections.

"We do not see this election as being any less important than the General Election," Professor Miller said. "Every exercise of the sovereignty of the people, through election of their representatives, must be treated with the utmost respect and conducted with the highest level of integrity and efficiency."

Professor Miller added that all the necessary logistical arrangements for the elections had been made and he expected them to be even better run than last year's General Election.

He urged members of the public to check the Voters' List to ensure that they were on it, follow all the necessary protocol governing electors, and to go to the polls on June 19 to exercise their democratic franchise.
