'George Phang' sought by police

The St. Elizabeth police say they are seeking Newton Horne, alias 'George Phang', in connection with multiple counts of shooting with intent and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

Newton is the brother of Norman Horne, the People's National Party (PNP) caretaker for South East St. Elizabeth.

"He (Newton) is definitely wanted for questioning in connection with a shooting incident in the parish, which occurred last Saturday night leading up to the general election," a police officer told The Gleaner, yesterday.

The police are alleging that on September 1, while the National Democratic Movement's candidate for South East St. Elizabeth, Conrad Powell, and his entourage were campaigning in the Red Bank community, they were attacked. It is said that Newton Horne allegedly tried to force himself into Powell's car, but was prevented from doing so when Powell's driver sped off.

The driver, Michael Plummer, a 37-year-old ex-soldier, was negotiating a corner when shots were fired, one of which penetrated the car and caught him in his back. Powell and another passenger escaped unhurt.

Powell, an attorney-at-law, has confirmed the incident.

The bullet was still lodged in Palmer's back up to press time yesterday (Thursday).

Left the island

Police sources told The Gleaner that their investigations have revealed that Newton Horne may have left the island for a neighbouring island, and is en route to Canada.

"This information is strictly based on information received, as we have no evidence to substantiate this as yet. However, we will be seeking the assistance from our international counterparts as our investigations progress," the source stated
