'Ballots safe'

Published in the Jamaica Gleaner: Monday | September 3, 2007

The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) is seeking to assure the public that no one is able to verify how the police, the military or election-day workers voted on August 28, saying that the ballots remain in a very secure location.

The EOJ says the ballots are in sealed envelopes in sealed boxes in a locked, lighted room that requires two assistant directors to open.

The EOJ also says security procedures at the Electoral Office are extensive and include consistent digital video recordings of the sealed ballot boxes.

According to the EOJ, the entire sorting process of the sealed envelopes and their storage was observed by two members, each from the main political parties. This process was also digitally recorded.
