Political murder in Yallahs, says PNP
Published in the Jamaica Gleaner: Sunday | August 12, 2007
In the latest of a string of accusations by the two major political parties, the People's National Party (PNP) is labelling as political, the shooting death of one of its members, Selvin Green, of Yallahs in St. Thomas.
According to the Constabulary Communication Network's (CCN) liaison officer for St. Thomas, about 3:45 p.m., Green was walking along a roadway in the community when explosions were heard. It was subsequently discovered that Green had been shot dead. The CCN says it has not established a motive for the killing.
The PNP, however, is accusing supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) of being responsible for the shooting death.
In a release, the PNP said: "Reports reaching our offices indicate that Sylvan (Selvin) was fatally shot when a group of persons that were traversing through the constituency, and who are believed to be supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party, fired shots in close proximity to the PNP campaign office on School Lane in Yallahs. After the shooting had subsided, it was discovered that Comrade Green was dead."
But, general secretary of the JLP, Karl Samuda, has denied the claims, stating that his party is not aware of the PNP's allegations. "We are not aware of any such activity relating to the shooting of any PNP supporter. That would be a police matter," he told The Sunday Gleaner.
