THE
POLICE in St. Ann said they will be stepping up their drive
against violators of the road traffic law, and is warning
candidates contesting the October 16 election to ensure that
their supporters obey the law, especially during motorcades.
Officer
in charge of traffic at the St. Ann's Bay Police Station,
Corporal Higilock Mullings, told The Gleaner that the police
in the parish have been clamping down on traffic violators
since the start of the election campaign, with several persons
either being prosecuted or warned.
He
said, however, that over the past week the bad driving habits
have become even more evident, resulting in one fatal accident
and that the police are now being forced to move quickly to
prevent any further loss of lives or injuries.
On
Wednesday, August 2, a Toyota Corolla Station Wagon with eight
JLP supporters aboard plunged over a gully along the Steer
Town main road in St. Ann, resulting in the death of 27-year-old
Colleen Sewell and injuries to the others, including driver
George Henry, who is now facing a charge of manslaughter.
Referring
to that accident, Corporal Mullings said this is only a sign
of what can happen when people become careless on the road.
"I
am appealing to the political parties to make sure they have
enough marshalls in place to control the movement of motorists
taking part in their political campaign", he said.
Corporal
Mullings said he hopes the politicians and their supporters
will take heed of this warning and ensure a peaceful, incident-free
election.
