CONSTITUENCY
PROFILES:
St. Elizabeth North Eastern
Truly a safe PNP seat

THE
INCUMBENT Roger Clarke (PNP), will be very lonely at the winning
post in the upcoming general election as this is truly a safe
PNP seat.
St.
Elizabeth North Eastern was among the 13 newly created constituencies
in 1959.
Of
the nine contested Parliamentary General Elections (1959-1997)
the PNP won eight times to the JLP's one. The name Sydney
Pagon is a household name in St. Elizabeth North Eastern having
won the seat in 1959, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1976 and 1989.
In
1993 Roger Clarke proved a worthy successor to the legendary
Sydney Pagon as he defeated Winston Lewis (JLP), by a massive
4,460 majority. In 1997 the incumbent Roger Clarke was no
less devastating, polling 10,058 votes to defeat by 5,819
votes, newcomer Basil Perriel (JLP), who polled 4,239. Winston
Lewis, the NDM candidate, lost his deposit as he polled a
mere 298 votes.
With
a likely 5.6% increase in the voters' list for the next general
election the JLP will undoubtedly put lots of daylight between
itself and the NDM/UPP, should they contest, with the incumbent
Roger Clarke (PNP), very lonely at the winning post. Truly
a safe PNP seat.
